As part of the “Strength of Stories” Collection, “Coolibah Blossom” is an expression of strength, resilience and beauty. Surviving and thriving in the outback, Coolibahs are the perfect subject to paint because they are an encouraging testimony to overcoming harsh conditions and emerging with strength and beauty.

However, the “Strength of Stories” Collection is not just about trees and wildflowers. I decided to use text in the artworks, to remind us of the people who have also survived and thrived in the same landscape. In
the text, the viewer catches glimpses of outback life. The text gives insight into the spirit of the people who, like the plants, are strong, adaptable, insightful and have an inner beauty that inspires and cares for others.

“Coolibah Blossom” is a beautiful and subtle display of colour and design that epitomizes the Australian spirit. It features the blossoms of the Coolibah tree which are a delight to see…..and smell! I wish I could bottle the sweet fragrance. Walking by the Darling River when the Coolibah is in bloom is a delight to experience.

Using a variety of mixed media, including acrylic paint, ink, text, soil and bark, I created this image on fine linen. Apart from making interesting texture in the works, the grey floodplain soil and bark provide a real and tactile connection to the subject matter. My hope is that “Coolibah Blossom” will delight and intrigue you as you take time to hear and consider its story of strength, resilience and beauty.
